An Index of Newsletters Produced and Published by Andrew Hope III, from 1978 to 1995
This index of 20 newsletters that Andy Hope produced over a 17 year period include several dozen articles and essays, many written by Andy and all edited by him, revealing the depth and breadth of his interests: Indigenous culture, Alaska tribes, modern Alaska Native history, contemporary politics, education, book reviews, poetry, and music.
Of interest to historians: the article by Frank O. Williams (see #7) about Native health pro- grams; the interview by Andy Hope with Judson Brown (#13), a Tlingit leader who discusses his attendance at the 1929 ANB/ANS Grand Camp that initiated Alaska Native claims and at the meetings that led to the formation of the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska; and the articles by Jim Bowen about the origins of Alaska Native judicial systems (numbers 11, 12, 14, and 18).
Beginning in 1993, Andy was the principal organizer of the Sharing Our Knowledge conferences (see www.SharingOurKnowledge.org) until his death of cancer at age 58 in 2008. Relevant to that legacy are the reports about two “lost” clan conferences (aka, Sharing Our Knowledge) for which there are no video recordings and little documentation. These were held in Sitka 1995 (see: #19, November 1995), and in Ketchikan/Saxman 1996 (#20 November 1996).
Through the 1980s Andy was general manager of the Sitka Community Association (now Sitka Tribe of Alaska). During the same period he served as a director for Shee Atiká Inc., so it comes as no surprise that two of these publications (numbers 2 & 6) served as annual reports for both organizations. Through succeeding years, Andy was regional coordinator of the Alaska Rural Systemic Initiative of the University of Alaska.
Andrew Hope III was in the vanguard of those leading the way to what is now widely considered a renaissance of Tlingit culture. He was a mentor to many including Peter Metcalfe who compiled and indexed this record of newsletters. Any suggested changes, additions, or constructive com- ments can be shared via peterMmetcalfe@gmail.com
A note about the newsletter publications that follow: Most of the pdfs were produced several years ago thanks to Linda Wynne of Sealaska Heritage Institute. The typographical oddities and typos that will be found are not in the originals and were due to the limits of the scanning technology then in use.
